Dr. Izabel Souza works as a certified interpreter (Conference, Legal & Medical) and interpreter educator (Boston University, Cambridge College, Osaka University). Dr. Souza has published articles on topics related to interpreting competencies, interpreter reimbursement, intercultural mediation, and language access. Dr. Souza served as president and executive director of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and was responsible for launching the first national accredited medical interpreter certification program in the United States. Dr. Souza served as Secretary General for the International Federation of Translators, and works as FIT liaison to ISO in the development of standards related to interpretation and translation. Her latest research involves exploring the cultural work of medical interpreters, which led to the publication of the book titled Intercultural Mediation in Healthcare.
